Malaysia News: Ultimatum to armed intruders

PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak yesterday issued an ultimatum to the armed intruders in Sabah to surrender or face action by the Malaysian authorities.

The prime minister said the time had lapsed to consider the demands of the intruders who claim to be members of the royal army of the Sultanate of Sulu in the Philippines.

The Malaysian government was firm in the matter because the crime committed by them was most serious, he told reporters after paying his last respects to the two slain police commandos at the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) base in Subang near here.

The commandos were killed in a gun battle with the intruders in Kampung Tanduo, 130km from Lahad Datu, Friday. Twelve of the intruders were also killed in the shootout.

“I telephoned President Benigno Aquino III of the Philippines last night (Friday) to state the stand of the Malaysian government on the matter after the gun battle yesterday.

KUALA LUMPUR: Another member of the Malaysian security forces has been killed, this time in a firefight with armed intruders in Kampung Selamat, Semporna, about 150km from Kampung Tanduo, Lahad Datu, Sabah.

According to a police source, another policeman was also injured in the firefight which began at 8pm Saturday.

Lahad Datu and Tawau Police Special Investigation Divisions have been deployed to the scene.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar, when contacted, confirmed the incident but refused to comment further.

On Friday, two VAT 69 police commandos were killed, while three others were injured in a shootout with the armed intruders in Kampung Tandou.

KUALA LUMPUR: Negotiations with a group of armed Sulu gunmen are not over although the deadline for them to leave Sabah has passed, Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said.

There are no more deadlines for the group to give up their weapons and return to the Philippines, Hishammuddin said, adding that the Malaysian government's patience has been wearing thin.

"The deadline has been extended so many times," he told reporters here Friday.

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia after brokering a peace deal between the Philippine Government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front in October has now brought Thailand and a rebel group to the discussion table.

Thailand and the rebel group Badan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) signed in Kuala Lumpur yesterday a General Consensus Document to Launch a Dialogue Process for Peace in the southern provinces, and agreed to invite Malaysia to be the facilitator.

National Security Council secretary-general Lt Gen Pharadorn Phatthanatabutr represented Thailand while the chief of the BRN liaison office in Malaysia, Hassan Taib, signed for the group.
