Biggest pearl in the world is on Boracay

Boracay Island, Aklan – A Chinese-Filipino resort owner in this island is also the owner of what will be considered as the largest pearl in the world.
In an interview Monday, Richard King, chairman of the Crown Regency Hotel, said that a group of gemologists from the Guinness Book of World Records is expected to arrive here Dec.19-20 to formally inspect the pearl he calls as the “Pearl of the Kings.”
Guinness currently recognizes the six-kilo “Pearl of Allah” now in the United States as the largest pearl in the world.
“Based on our initial measurement, the ‘Pearl of the Kings’ weighs around nine kilos and we are confident that we could be certified by the Guinness Book of World Records,” King said.
He added that he inherited the pearl from his grandfather. It reportedly came from the waters of Palawan like the “Pearl of Allah.”
Reports said that the “Pearl of Allah” also known as the “Pearl of Lao Tzu” was given by a Muslim chieftain in the 70s and was found by a diver at Brookes Point, Palawan.
“We have now decided to display the “Pearl of the Kings” at the oceanarium park in the Crown Regency Hotel as one of its attractions.
“Aside from the pearl, our oceanarium also boasts of having the longest oceanarium tunnel in the Philippines, having 30 meters length,” King said.
The “Pearl of Kings” although big is not considered as a non-nacreous pearl having no iridescence or sheen; thus it is not considered a gem stone.
It is said to have come from a giant clam which produces the so-called tridacna pearl.

Video clips reignite political rivalries

MANILA - Video clips recently posted online that show government officials discussing relief efforts following Typhoon Haiyan have reignited a long-standing rivalry between two of the most powerful political families in the Philippines.

At least two videos of a meeting between Alfredo Romualdez, the mayor of hard-hit Tacloban City, and Interior Secretary Manuel Roxas II were uploaded to video sharing website YouTube earlier this week, showing how they were debating the need for a city council resolution that would allow the central government to take over the relief effort from the local government.

Roxas and other officials have dismissed criticism of the delay, saying they were in Tacloban a day before the typhoon hit and sent police, military and emergency relief aid to the city the follow day, Nov. 9.

Romualdez said he asked the central government to take over relief and rescue operations and send police and soldiers to help restore order amid looting.

Romualdez testified that relief aid came slowly to Tacloban because Mr. Roxas had insisted that a city council resolution is needed to ensure that the national government's takeover won't be misconstrued later as a politically motivated move to undermine Mr. Aquino.

In a nationally televised news conference he said one particular video clip posted by former congressman Josemari Gonzalez was manipulated. Gonzales is the father of Romuladez's wife.

US state secretary cites Filipino resilience

Secretary of State John Kerry is headed to Tacloban, one of the hardest-hit cities by Typhoon Haiyan. In his first day in the Philippines, Mr. Kerry focused on economic and security matters, with China’s military assertiveness in the South China Sea never far from the spotlight.

The US is giving the Philippines $40 million to strengthen its ability to protect its territorial waters and combat terrorism. Mr. Kerry, citing a fight between the Philippines and China over disputed waters, sided with the Philippines preferred means of settlement international arbitration rather than bilateral negotiations.

Kerry said he discussed with Philippine political leaders ways to expand and increase economic and trade cooperation between the U.S. and the Philippines, including the possibility of the Philippines joining in the unfolding Trans-Pacific Partnership trade pact.
