Update: 3 killed in Kidapawan City jail raid

KIDAPAWAN CITY, Philippines – Three persons were killed  while 12 others were injured following an attack on the city jail here around 10 p.m. Sunday, February 19.
Police  Supt. Raul Supiter, deputy provincial commander of North Cotabato, said at least 12 heavily unidentified armed men fired a rocket propelled grenade (RPG) on the wall of the city jail in an attempt to rescue Datukan Samad alias Lastikman.
Samad, who was charged with  kidnapping with ransom, robbery in band with double homicide and multiple murder charges, has been detained after he was arrested in December last year.
Supiter said the suspects were wearing ski masks,  black shirts and black pants. "They fired the RPG first then fired on high-powered rifles  on the gate," he said quoting the spot report from the city police office.
But the suspects failed to rescue Samad as the jail guards were able to repel them.
As the armed men fled towards barangay Nuwakan, shooting some persons along the way, the police said.
Supiter said a combined police unit from the city and provincial police office and rescue units ran after the fleeing suspects.
"Hinabol kasi nila, may improvised explosive device (IED) pala. Malapit lang sa city jail sumabog," he said adding that the explosion killed  three members of the rescue unit.
While the 12 others who were injured were immediate rushed to the hospital.
Samad is believed to be a follower of rogue Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) commander Umra Kato, who broke away from MILF and formed his own group known as Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom.
