Reform Towards Progressive Taxation!
What: Picket
When: November 19, 2012, 11:30 a.m.
Where: Office of the Department of Finance, Senate Building
In reaction to recent controversies regarding taxes on gold, "sin" products and on cellphone text messages, 150 members of the militant labor group Bukluran ng Manggagawang Pilipino will stage a picket tomorrow at the offices of the Finance Department and the Senate.
Leody de Guzman, BMP National President said, "No to new taxes! The workers demand a status quo on taxes to pave the way for an omnibus amendment of all tax legislation in compliance with the constitutional provision for a progressive system of taxation."
"The current taxation system is anti-poor and regressive. It relies more on the withholding tax on wages and sales taxes in the form of the 12% EVAT. As a result, those who have less in life have more in taxes as compared to the privileged few who have accountants and lawyers to disguise tax evasion into mere tax avoidance," de Guzman added.
Meanwhile, urban poor leader Pedring Padrigon, national president of the Kongreso ng Pagkakaisa ng Maralitang Lungsod (KPML) criticized the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for its proposal to tax the usage of cellphone text messaging.
He clarified, "Christine Lagarde of the IMF does not give a damn if the Filipino poor bear the brunt of taxes. She cares less even if the BIR bleeds the people dry. As a creditor, she wants to broaden the tax base just to ensure debt servicing and debt payments by the Philippine government to foreign financial firms. We call on our lawmakers to display institutional independence, not only from Malacanang but from foreign capital particularly the IMF. Tax the Rich, not the poor!". #
